4 Sep 1957 The remains of an American plane found on a glacier white Maybe it was crashed during a 'war action The discovery made by a driver and two Dutch customers - The device, probably a bomber, hath been smashed against the wall of the Aiguille du Glacier - Still no body spotted (Our special service) From the Rifugio Elisabetta, 3 weeks. Courmayeur is taking the mystery surrounding the remains of a plane found in five hours' walk from the hotel-refuge Elizabeth, over the glacier of the "Lex Blanche." We have seen some of these wrecks that definitely belong to an American-made military plane, a Constellation or a Liberator aircraft, however, should have disappeared long ago, perhaps during an operation of war. The discovery was made by twenty-three Pennard Edward, son of the guide Albino, Sunday, Aug. 11, but today the news is trapalata. Pennard accompanied the two Dutch customers, father and son, the Aiguille du Glacier, at an altitude of 3817 when, at about 9.30 that morning, emerging from a "policeman" saw a twisted propeller plane with three blades, embedded in rock . Of course, surprised, began to look for other customers with the two-remains of the plane, which a hundred feet below the summit of the Aiguille du Glacier front and had clashed violently against the rock, it was possible to see right on the carcass of a engine, but it stuck in a crevice of the rock. All around the mountain, looking good, plow more visible wrecks scattered: even from a cliff hanging, swinging in the wind, a piece of the unit radio transmitter held by some wires. At a distance of 50 meters, another engine was installed as poised on a sort of terrace, just a few meters on the right, on a slope, a wing sticking out of aluminum covered in part by the snow. The plane had disintegrated against the mountain among the wreckage recovered in part from the guide there are also rubber tubes, belonging to the breathing masks that the pilots used to high altitudes. All material found is a 5 hour walk from the hut on the path of the Aiguille du Glacier, accessible only with a guide, but other wrecks are scattered on the glacier dell'Eslellette swept by avalanches and landslides and is only now emerging for the movement of glacier and the disappearance of snow melted by the sun of August. All scrap is in perfect condition: there are bolts and plates. Bearing-holder still covered with fat, there are radio wires covered with colored sleeves that seem to come straight from the factory today. On a life jacket was found written in pencil: "W Ner! 'And below, called by an arrow,' P. R. Mc Dermott 'on the back is stamped a date: 1943. The mask of a radio transmitter we have obtained the name of the manufacturer: Honeywell Minneapolis Re.Co. Minneapolis (Minnesota). The wrecks which are deposited in part to the Refuge Elisabetta, suggest that this is a military aircraft bombing, probably American. No body has been found so far but if this is really a bomber - as has the confernato ten. colonel Maggi pilot, commander of the Air Rescue Center Alta Italy Linate (Milan) - should be around, at an altitude of about 3600, the unburied corpses of the pilots and crew of specialists. Tomorrow, the Air Force will send a commission of inquiry in the area.

Nessun corpo umano tra i resti dell'apparecchio

Nessun corpo umano tra i resti dell'apparecchio L'aereo caduto sul M. Bianco Nessun corpo umano tra i resti dell'apparecchio

(Nostro servizio varicolore)

No body in the remains of the unit The plane crashed on Mount No white body in the remains of the unit (Our service Varicolori) From the Rifugio Elisabetta, 4 weeks. Glacier dell'Estellette, over 3000 meters above the Valley of the Blank Lex, in the afternoon a group of policemen, led by Captain Lucas of Aosta and Courmayeur Giacomini Marshal, made a reconnaissance in search of bodies of fliers and other materials to recover the aircraft crashed to the Aiguille du Glacier, peak M 3817 elevantesi above the aforesaid glacier. But no body was found. To identify the aircraft, well nothing was found important, if not a broken spar length of five meters and a weight of thirty pounds. We must then wait for the commission of inquiry appointed the Air Force, among whose members there will be a senior U.S. air force to establish anything definite. The discovery of a flight jacket, however, has revealed that one of the crew belonged to the Air Force U.S. Army. With a powerful telescope you could see at an altitude of about 3700, the motor driven in the rock, by the statement made by Pennard, which was the first guide to discover the remains, is stellar. Glacier dell'Estellette there should be other material. It must be said that large cracks may have swallowed the plane smashed shares and other relics may have been swept downstream by the avalanches, may have suffered the same fate as the bodies of the unfortunate aviators. We must await the outcome of the investigation to be conducted, as we said, our Air Force in conjunction with the United States, to determine with certainty whether the bombers crashed during the last war, or instead only recently . None in Courmayeur remember hearing or seeing the aircraft fall into the area, except for two German fighters who rolled into one after the other, against the mountain in 1944 behind the Hill of Mark, a place that Elizabeth is a refuge from ' hours of travel, but on another front

Perhaps the wreck of a Dakota found on the Mont Blanc The fuselage imprisoned on the glacier Estellette

Aosta, on Thursday evening. (G. g.)

The police in Courmayeur rose this morning on the glacier Estellette in the upper Val Veni, to recover the wreckage of a plane that crashed on Mont Blanc is considered during the last world war.

The wreckage of the airplane - it seems to be a Dakota aviation. U.S. crashing against the rocks of the mountain to return to base after a raid on Italy North British - were found yesterday by two climbers. Guido and Ferruccio Vignolo Courmayeur Yachler of Genoa, scattered on the glacier for a radius of three hundred meters.

In the fuselage, in the grip of ice, are the remains of the airmen, while all around in the snow emerge twisted metal, pieces of the truck and the tail and other parts of the device. The site has been located in culture, is at 2500 meters above sea level and quite easily accessible from the shelter near Elizabeth. In recent days, faces were approached some tourists, pausing to search for some gruesome "souvenir." Yesterday other onlookers who rummaged among the wreckage of the cockpit, were departed from, Vignolo climber and his companion.

Other remains probably the same unit had been found in the same area nearly two decades ago, in '53: the propeller of one engine appeared stuck in a rock. Later new wreckage recovered pol glacier allowed the identification of the aircraft for an American Dakota, possibly hit by flak and crashed while returning to a base in Britain, but of the six crew members no trace was found. It is more likely during the day will also take place on a military helicopter of the Alpine School of Aosta.

Incuriositi siamo andati a vedere ».

A flight of crows on the glacier showed the wreckage of a plane with the bodies of the pilots

On the white expanse of Estellette in Val Veni to 2600 meters Maybe it's an American bomber which was returning from a raid on Italy North America in World War II - were two climbers to discover the carcass - Many tourists have visited the area to collect metal pieces as "souvenirs" - Now the remains are guarded and seek to recover the bodies

(From our special correspondent) Courmayeur, August 17.

A low flight of crows on the white expanse of the glacier Estellette, at 2600 feet in the Alta Val Veni, indicates the point where it emerged the carcass of an airplane. Maybe a bomber crashed returning from a raid on Italy North America in recent years of the war. Between the plates, the mummified body of a man. On the lapel of his uniform two gold letters: "U.S.."

For over a quarter of a century, the glacier had kept his secret. The bodies of the aviators were missing in the immense coffin of ice. The tragic end of the war mission had no witnesses. No prayer for the fallen. Soltanfo few sentences, in the terse language of military operations in the bulletin: A plane has not returned to the base, the crew is missing. The families were informed by telegram.

Now, after so many years, the tragedy of the bomber has returned to light. The slow flow of the glacier has released the wreckage from the thick blanket of snow that covered it. Yesterday was seen by two climbers, who have warned the police in Courmayeur. They started operations for the recovery of remains. A long and difficult: the remains of the fuselage, including the body of a glimpse of the airmen, are still imprisoned in the ice. The mountain does not seem to leave its prey. Other fragments, one of the engines, are scattered over a radius of one kilometer. You see dark shadows emerge from the ice. Indistinct forms, perhaps other bodies. Tomorrow rescuers try to open a passage between the ice with mine.

Edward Pennard, guardian of Elizabeth Shelter, a two-hour march from the place where the wreck was found, said: "Probably they are the remains of the same plane that I had seen back in '56, during a climb Aiguille des Glaciers. " The mountaineer recalls having found several pieces of metal just below the summit of the mountain at an altitude of 3600. "It may be that the airplane has crashed into the summit and returned to base." Perhaps the plane was damaged, hit by flak, and for this he flew below the level of security. Either the pilot had lost the route. After returning from missions, the planes often came back in dribs and drabs, concerned only to reach safety, away from the enemy batteries.

The most likely hypothesis is that this is a bomber headed for the U.S. air force bases in England. It seems to be of a 'B 17', those aircraft, according to experts, nine men had normal crew. It could also be, though, a Polish military aircraft, disappeared while flying over the Alps that area in '47, two years after the end of the war. Or a "Dakota" crashed in December of '52, with four people. The two climbers who discovered the wreckage: Guido Vignolo, 26, Courmayeur, and Ferruccio Jochler, 34, of Genoa, however, consider whether you are an American bomber. "I saw the insignia on the collar of his uniform - said Vignolo - the two letters," U.S. ", stood out sharp." The discovery happened by chance. 'Fall from a climb - said the mountaineer - when our attention was drawn to a flock of crows circling the glacier. Their screech echoed through the valley. Intrigued, we went to see. "

When news of the discovery hath been spread, dozens of tourists climbed up the glacier. Many snapped up pieces of twisted metal: macabre souvenirs of a holiday trip. "You took care of the dead - bitterly tells Vignolo - sottanto thought to take pictures." Now the relics are guarded: the curious can not be closer. Today, a military helicopter of the School of Aosta mountain flew over the area, trying to locate the remains scattered over a mile.

The pilot, Captain Elijah says, "From the aerial reconnaissance is obvious that the airplane exploded on impact against the mountain. The crew's death was instantaneous. " Eight young, nine in the worst case, which fell at home after a mission. The worst was over: another hour of flight, maybe less, and all would be over. But suddenly appeared on their way to the summit of the Aiguille des Glaciers.

d'Estellette — dice Edoardo Pennard — avanza di 30, 40 metri all'anno. Domani verrà inviato un rapporto all'aeronautica militare.

Found the remains of one of the crew of "Boeing" buried in the ice on the glacier at 2600 meters

The aircraft is an American bomber crashed during the last conflict - probably had 9 militaria aboard - in the collision against the mountain disintegrated

(From our special correspondent) Courmayeur, August 18.

Amidst violent rain and snow, this morning we got onto the glacier Estellette with the rescue team of the police officers and civil aviation officials. The wreckage, found recently by two climbers, appears on the blanket of ice, swept by a furious wind. The remains of the cockpit, shapeless heap of twisted metal and tangle of wires, are caught in the grip of ice. Initially it was planned to use small explosive charges to free them, but in practice this system has proved more dangerous than effective.

Thus, attacking the hard snow crust with the ax, the police have released the cockpit, looking for some element that would allow identification of the aircraft. Something has been found. On one of the additional tanks can still be seen an inscription: Boeing B 17 G, followed by a series of illegible words, among which a date and Army Contract Jan (January) 1945. For the two aviation experts, Dr. Piccilli, Caselle airport management and the expert Gallo, of the Regional Offices of the registry, no doubt about it

. "It's an American military plane - says Gallo -. Constructed from the Boeing factory, probably in the last year of the war. The letter B, which precedes the number 17, stands for "Bomber". Indicates, namely, that it is a bomber. " These aircraft, used by the Americans during the last war, had usually a crew of 9 persons. Bombers armed with machine guns and cannon, are the ancestors of the modern B 52, superfortress operating in Vietnam.

To confirm the hypothesis that it is a case of a military aircraft, the wreckage has been recovered including scraps of flight suits, a degree from a U.S. Air Force sergeant, a parachute and two lifeboats. "These elements - Dr. Piccilli says.- confirm that this is a war plane. No civilian aircraft, in fact, brings on board the parachute. " Edward Pennard, the keeper of the shelter Elizabeth who first, in '56, had seen the metal ruins on the ice wall of the Aiguilles des Glaciers, bis sure that it is the same plane. "The first time I saw it - he says - was about 300 meters from the summit. You could still see very well where had been the impact against the mountain. A blackish spot on the wall of smooth ice, less than 80 meters from the top. " Among the wreckage of the cockpit were recovered the remains of one of the aviators. Part of the torso, an arm, a severed hand. Others are probably still trapped in the ice, locked in the shattered cockpit. A coffin of twisted steel, lost in the solitude of Glacier Estellette. 'It is certain that the plane exploded on impact - the expert Gallo says -. Some metal fragments are smaller than a pack of cigarettes. The wreckage will be scattered over a radius of at least a mile. " Under these conditions, find the mangled remains of the nine airmen and here is impossible. Do not forget that for over 25 years the body of the aircraft remained trapped in the ice. It has come to light, 700 feet below the point where it was first sighted on the movement of the glacier. The Glacier Estellette - says Edward Pennard - advances by 30 to 40 meters per year. The fuselage has been dragged down, crushed betwee the ice blocks tumbling and stuck in the blocks of ice or crevasses that suddenly opened up.

Tonight rescue teams have returned to the valley. The remains of the aviator were brought to the cemetery of Courmayeur. Tomorrow will be sent an Air Force report. "Because this is a warplane, it is their responsibility." The finding will also inform the U.S. embassy in Rome.

American officials for the aircraft investigation

American officials for the plane in the Val d'Aosta - The aircraft fell after the war on the glacier Estellette identified two pilots

(From our correspondent) Aosta, August 31.

A committee of experts, consisting of official U.S. Air Force base in Aviano (Pordenone) appointed by the Embassy America, took an inspection on the glacier Estellette, in the Val Veny, where in recent days has been found wreckage of a plane crash on Mont Blanc after the war. Despite heavy rain and snow water that invest a few days the Alps, the aviation experts, with some officials of the U.S. Consulate in Turin, rose, accompanied by the police in Courmayeur, up to 2500 m. above sea level on the bottom of the glacier. The police were able to leave with a pickaxe and other pieces of scrap "Boeing B-17 '(a four-engine bomber) which, if not perhaps allow an exact reconstruction of the disaster, allow at least most likely to identify the members of' crew.

Other important elements were added to those already found today during sopralluo ghee made ten days ago. A document with the photograph and the name of Major David Ledhetter, released in 1946 (there are no other data), was recovered in the wreckage of the cockpit. It will be a useful guide for research that is conducted over a week by those in the Air Force Records. A short distance from the cockpit there was also a backpack with an ID Tag on which is engraved the name of Colonel Hay, and the serial number 0-19467 issued in 1947. Other documents released in the same year, hiding under the blanket of ice, were brought to the surface. E 'was therefore excluded the hypothesis, advanced at first, that the four engines had crashed into the Aiguille des Glaciers (a peak of 3818 meters which marks the top of the glacier Estellette) during the return from a' Italy raid on High, The disaster has certainly occurred after 1947. "In order to gather evidence to confirm with certainty one of the many assumptions made so far - says one of the committee members - take a long time. We sent the information in our possession including the Chief of Staff of the United States, but the task is particularly difficult because in the same area were found wreckage from other aircraft dropped at different times. " It is now thought that the Boeing B-17 is precipitaco during a transfer flight from an Italian base in England. Most likely, with greater Ledhetter and Colonel Hay seven other airmen were aboard, including a lieutenant, was found in a badge. The guardian of the villas in the Val Ferret, Angelo Bonora, said: "I remember that in 1956, one night we were awakened by a roar in the Val Veny were raised very high flames, the fire lasted for over half an hour. Now we thought that the Refuge Elisabetta was devastated by fire. The next morning, when rescue teams reached the upper Val Veny, but everything was fine. Avanzala was then the hypothesis of a plane crash. "

The research carried out after a few weeks at the top of the glacier confirmed the incident. "Almost on top of the summit of the Aiguille des Glaciers - says Edward Pennurd, keeper of the Refuge Elisabetta - you could still see the spot where had been the impact against the rock." U.S. Air Force officers believe, however, that the disaster have happened in '47 or '48: "In that period were made several training flights and transfers, whose routes passed over the massive" White. " Research on the glacier will continue in the coming days. "We need to dig carefully - said the commander of police in Courmayeur -. Not rule out that the ice could be hidden in some explosive device. " Meanwhile it was planned that the remains of the aviator, recovered in recent days between the sheets of the fuselage was destroyed and transported in Courmayeur, Fri Gano transferred to the cemetery of American troops in Vicenza

Perhaps important "secrets" found in the plane on the glacier of Mont Blanc The bomber crashed immediately after the war

"The recovery of remains and what is shown on four engines must continue at any cost," said the U.S. military authorities in aviation (From our correspondent) Aosta. September 1.

U.S. military authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Italy are involved in the recovery of wreckage of the bomber "Boeing B. 17 'after the war fell on Mount Blanc. "The recovery of remains and how much is on board the four-engine must continue at all costs', and the peremptory order was sent this morning by the base commanding general of U.S. troops in Vicenza at the head of the commission by some military technicians day in Courmayeur.

Today, shortly before noon, the officers who participated for four days with the police to search the Courmayeur Estellette glacier, in the Val Veni, left for Aviano (Pordenone) with a wealth of documentation and hundreds Photography; also wanted to bring the important documents found among the wreckage of the cockpit was destroyed, but the items are seized. By the police at the disposal of the courts.

Among the things left in the barracks in Courmayeur is an "interesting" tab: a code of acronyms and numbers written by hand, seemingly indecipherable but that seems to have revealed something important to American officials.

So far they have been found elements that have enabled three of the crew, with the largest pilot Laurence Lofton Cobb, born April 28, 1920, stationed in Germany, which were made payable documents issued by the "War Department" (Ministry of war) and the 'U. S. Groupe Control Germany "(Council on American-controlling Germany), Colonel H. Hay, which was found a backpack with plate recognition, and finally the soldier M. M. Cassel, number 34896920 (technical, maybe radio operator), which was found a chain with two medals of identification.

Of the other airmen, five or maybe six, was not found nothing. Now, should not be a problem for U.S. authorities to reach, through a bureaucratic research, identification of other crew members.

The officers of the Committee, however, still have many reservations here were found the fingerprints of the body of the aviator's remains recovered in recent days. The fingerprints will be sent to Washington and co-sending of American bases in West Germany.

One gets the impression that the committee members are investigating around a most important episode of what they want to appear: elusive respond to questions, while meticulously inspect the objects found, and photographing each code symbol.

What was the route followed by the bomber? Because the disappearance of this does not seem to been reported? What mission could lead to war by an American aircraft stationed in Germany to fly over the Mont Blanc? 'Peaceful purposes', was repeated several times by U.S. officials in

these days, other questions have been answered. Now the Americans have left Courmayeur, but continues to keep the command fired on continuing operations by phone calls.

Day by day appears to increase the impatience to know. The Pricolo sudden chasms that open up the expanse of ice, the cold wind that involves every day. the area. The inaccessibility of the sites have forced the American command to request the intervention of 'experts of the mountain. " Four guides of Courmayeur, led by Alexis Ollier. Tate are responsible for continuing the search.

"Do everything you can in the shortest possible time - have been commanded to guides - do not we take care of expenses."

One meter below the surface of ice can be seen in a dark spot transparency: It appears the silhouette of a man. Tomorrow will be dug out with picks the hard crust of ice.

You look in the ice of the tragic plane crash secret from the corresponding

Aosta, on Saturday evening. (G. g.)

Four guides of Courmayeur, led by Alexis Ollier, a policeman, go up this morning on the glacier Estellette, upper Val Veni, to find other items on the misfortune of the U.S. bomber dropped immediately after the war, the Mont Blanc.

A dangerous and difficult work: the remains of the aircraft scattered over a radius of one kilometer and it is feared that under the thick ice crust hides a huge crevasse. "A hole could open up any minute, say the police, and then be able to save themselves would be a miracle. "

The interest shown by the Americans to recover what was on the "Boeing B 17 ', the anxious rush to know, even after the identification, albeit unofficially, with three crew members (including two senior officers) have conceived in many suspect that the plane went on board 'secret' military

Found the body of another airman of "Dakota" USA crashed in '46 August 20, 1975 Turin.

The glacier in the Val Veny dell'Estelletle returned another victim of American aircraft 'Dakota' precipitate in the summer of '46. They were the police in Courmayeur to discover the remains of a mummified corpse, stiffened by the cold. Vicenza will be transported to and buried in American Cemetery.

It will be recalled that in '55 they were found the remains of a plane. Only after several years it was possible to discover the cockpit with the frozen bodies of some airmen and reconstruct the tragedy. It was a twin engine "Dakota" with six crew, started from Sicily and directed at a military base in France, probably for a delicate mission. Reference is made also of documents and instruments covered by military secret, which would have been on board

Bomber Glacier USA returned from the 'White' The "flying fortress" was precipitated forty-two years ago The detective on board a woman - The plane had been sighted in '72 COURMAYEUR - A Flying Fortress U.S. Air Force is re-emerging from the glacier Estellette, Val Veny to the bottom of the Mont Blanc massif. Reduced to a pile of twisted debris and wreckage, human remains still hidden: many bones and scraps of leather were recovered yesterday and brought into the cemetery of Courmayeur. The Boeing B17 has been identified by the police of the climbers along with the helicopter company Aosta dell'Elinucleo di Volpiano. The bomber (a four engine, armed with machine guns and cannon, with a wingspan of 31 meters and a weight of 17 tons) blew up - probably in December 1946 - after the collision with the tip of Aguillar des Glaciers falling into a thousand fragments on an area around half a mile in a circle. The glacier, in its descent towards the valley, has moved more than a mile, the carcass of the plane and now it is returning tens of pieces of scrap metal, many of which are collected as souvenirs by mountaineers. The "sleep" of B17 has lasted 42 years with only one waking up in August 1972 a guide to Courmayeur, Guido Vignolo, who is now 42, noticed on his return from a trip: "I was with a friend and we were suddenly faced with a heap of scrap metal - said in his sporting goods store -. There were also the insignia embroidered with the initials "U.S." We understood right away that this was a military aircraft and informed the police. " The findings, possible only for a few days (then it began to snow and ice closed), led to a partial solution to the enigma: in practice there was only a confirmation that it was an American bomber, probably in flight from Italy England.

Someone once linked to the discovery that memories of the old caretaker of the hut Elizabeth, Edward Pennard: "One night of winter '46, a few days before Christmas, I feel a rumble on the mountain, then the clouds appeared to the tongues of fire. We report what happened, but we received no request for specific research: despite what we got to the Aguille des Glaciers and noted on a wall about 80 meters below the summit, a circular area blackened by fire. But the glacier was not possible to search for frequent and heavy snowfalls.

That story began on the road good functional commissions (one American and one Italian), which formulated more precise assumptions: that plane could be a B17 lost in December 1946 with a crew of three men and six senior officers on board. The presence of the remains of the bomber opened the way to other allegations: the refuge Elisabetta Soldini, a couple of hours of travel from the glacier, including a glass of genepy and others, began to flourish disparate hypotheses. There are those who swore to have noticed by now charred trunks filled with documents, but whoever it was said sure there was a woman on board. Two stories not full field in the air, however, since the interest of the American authorities for that airplane was very lively and - during one of the few visits as possible - was found a silk blouse for women, blue polka dot. A gift that any aviator led to his wife or evidence of the presence of an illegal?

For now, it was found that a command that was probably the biggest velicolo Ledhetter David, who as engineer Sergeant W. M. Cassel. Among the transported was certainly Colonel Hay. It is also working on other names, which reading is difficult for the poor and platelet documents: they were two NCOs and two officers. If there were nine people on board, as they suggested fifteen years ago the American authorities, they are still two call. Precisely for this research riprenderenno tomorrow (probably with the participation of experts from the USAF 40th Tactical Group, Aviano), while the human remains have been recovered will be transferred to the American military cemetery in Vicenza Angelo Conti Caption: The upper arrow indicates the location of the crash of II-17 against the Aiguille des Glaciers, below, the place where, between the moraine of the glacier Estelette, were found the remains of the bomber, including tires Trolley
